Pumpkin Carving Parties

Skeleton with Pumpkin

After your pumpkins have ripened, it’s time to harvest them, and put them on display. Fall is a great time. You and your pumpkins will enjoy every minute of it. As Halloween nears, it’s time to have a pumpkin carving party, so your pumpkin will glow brightly on Halloween night!

A carving party may include carving, painting, or decorating pumpkins. Or, all three!

Timing Your Pumpkin Carving Party

When it comes to carving pumpkins, timing is everything. A healthy, undamaged, and uncarved pumpkin can keep for months. However, once you carve them, their days are numbered. When exposed to the air, the inside of it can quickly turn moldy. The warmer the weather in your area, the faster this happens. In a warm environment, this may be just a matter of a couple of days. Carved pumpkins kept indoors in a warm house, will turn moldy faster than pumpkins kept outdoors in cool weather.

Plan to carve your pumpkins into Jack O Lanterns, just a couple of days before Halloween. That way, they will still be good on the big night!

Tip: Put carved pumpkins in a cool garage or even the refrigerator overnight. They will last longer.

Planning and Preparing for Your Pumpkin Carving Party

Jack O’Lanterns are the center of attraction at pumpkin carving parties. There are things you may want to do, and items you will want to have handy, before the carving pumpkins into great works of art.

Start by considering the age of the group and the patience level of the pumpkin carvers. Older “kids” with lots of patience, may carve their pumpkins free form. Or, they may prefer challenging, detailed stencils.

Younger children, and those with short attention spans, need simple patterns. Or, you may want to consider painting pumpkins. Painting them is quick and easy. And most kids love to paint. Another option is to decorate pumpkins. You can also get pumpkin parts- eyes, noses, and mouths that stick onto the pumpkin. This is perfect for the littlest “carvers”.

Pumpkin Party Patterns and Stencils

Have plenty of patterns and stencils available. Your little artists will have varying tastes. Some will want friendly patterns. For others, the scarier, the better.

Also, consider the age group.  Use simple patterns for younger kids and more complex patterns for teens.

Preparing the Pumpkins

A lot of children do not want to wait for you to clean the guts out of the pumpkins. For the little ones, and larger groups, it is best to prepare the pumpkins before the pumpkin carving party begins. And, you can wash and roast the pumpkin seeds before the party, too. Cut off the lids. Scrape out the insides. Now, all the participants need to do, is carve the pumpkins!

Roasting Pumpkin Seeds

No pumpkin carving party is complete without roasting pumpkin seeds. If you cleaned out the pumpkins prior to the party, you probably roasted the seeds already. If not, while everyone is busy creating works of art, roast the seeds in the oven. Then, everyone can enjoy hot, fresh, and healthy pumpkin seeds.

Take Lots of Pictures

Don’t forget to take lots of pictures while the pumpkins are being carved. And, after they are complete, take pictures of each participant with their finished pumpkins. Parents of little carvers will really appreciate it when you text the pictures to them.

Finally, we want to add pictures of your carved pumpkins to this page. Send a jpg to us and we will post it on this page. Make sure to include your name, city, and state. Email:   gardener@gardenersnet.com
