• According to legend, in the 19th century English children put the fruit on strong grass stems and sold them as “Straw of berries”.

• Native Americans called them “heart seed berries”, as the fruit looked like a heart.

• Fresh strawberries were once used as toothpaste.

• There are more than 40 species of strawberries. Those found in the wild, are generally small.

• English and French gardeners put strawberry plants in their flower gardens, as they found the heart-shaped fruit attractive.

• In the U.S., California is the largest producer of strawberries, about 75% of the market. Florida is second.
