Crumbly Apple Pie Recipe Ingredients

Crust Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chilled, solid vegetable shortening
  • 1/4 cup ice water

Filling Ingredients:

  • 7 medium cooking apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Topping Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cups firmly packed dark brown sugar
  • 3/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/3 cup chilled butter or margarine, cut into small pieces,

Directions How to Make Crumbly Apple Pie

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 ° F.
  2. First, prepare the crust. In a medium bowl, mix together flour and salt.
  3. Next, cut shortening into flour mixture until coarse and crumbly.
  4. Add water, a little at a time, tossing with a fork until dough forms.
  5. Then, shape the dough into a disk, wrap it in plastic and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  6. Use a floured rolling pin on a floured surface, to roll out the dough into a 12″ circle.
  7. Fit dough onto a 9″ pie plate.
  8. Trim dough, keeping a 1/2″ overhang.
  9. Use a fork to make a decorative edge.
  10. Prepare to fill. Mix together all ingredients.
  11. Spoon filling into crust.
  12. Prepare Topping. In a small bowl, mix together brown sugar, flour, and nutmeg.
  13. Cut butter or margarine into the mixture until coarse and crumbly.
  14. Sprinkle topping over apples.
  15. Bake in the oven for approximately 35 minutes, until the topping is lightly brown and the apple mixture is bubbly.

Recipe Tip: If pie topping is browning too quickly, cover lightly with aluminum foil.
