Apple Pan Dowdy Recipe Description

Note: This is similar to Apple Crisp. But, it has more ingredients.

Apple Pan Dowdy Ingredients

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 quarts apples, peeled and sliced
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vinegar (optional)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 Tablespoon butter

Topping Ingredients:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 1/2Tablespooons shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup milk

Directions How to Make Apple Pan Dowdy

How to Make Apple Pan Dowdy:

  1. First, in a large saucepan mix sugar, flour, and salt.
  2. Next, add vinegar and water, and stir well.
  3. Then, cook over low heat until thick, stirring constantly.
  4. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
  5. Add vanilla, spices, and butter.
  6. Place apple slices into a greased glass baking dish.
  7. Pour syrup over apples, and set aside.

Topping Directions:

  1. In a bowl, mix flour, salt, and baking powder.
  2. Stir in shortening and mix until lumps are pea-sized.
  3. Add milk and stir until the flour mixture is wet.
  4. Pour over apples.
  5. Bake in the oven at 400 ° F for 40 minutes.
  6. Serve hot.

Tip: Serve plain, or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or whipped topping.
